Access to compassionate, high-quality healthcare remains a cornerstone of community well-being. Recognising the need to strengthen such care within a non-profit framework, Gurudwara Santkutia and the Liver Foundation have come together in a unique partnership to revitalise and operate Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital in Bhawanipur, Kolkata. This collaboration is built on shared values of service, dignity, and equity in healthcare delivery. The initiative seeks to blend the Gurudwara’s legacy of community service with the Liver Foundation’s clinical expertise and operational excellence, ensuring that patients receive ethical, affordable, and accessible care.
Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital in Bhawanipur, Kolkata, was established by Gurudwara Santkutia back in 1975 as a charitable healthcare facility, inspired by the values of service and compassion. For many years, the hospital served the community under the Gurudwara’s leadership. However, with the growing demands of modern healthcare and the need for trained professionals, the Gurudwara faced challenges in continuing its operations and the hospital was eventually closed in 2012.
To strengthen and revive the hospital, Gurudwara Santkutia has partnered with Liver Foundation, West Bengal, a not-for-profit organisation known for its commitment to affordable and high-quality healthcare. Since 2016, the Liver Foundation has been operating the Indian Institute of Liver and Digestive Sciences (IILDS), supported by philanthropic contributions.
While the Gurudwara will focus on upgrading infrastructure, the IILDS will manage patient care. Initially, the hospital will function as a daycare centre for outpatients and diagnostics, with plans to expand to inpatient services soon.
This collaboration marks a new beginning for Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital — combining faith and medical expertise to serve the community with dignity and care.
In healthcare, the Liver Foundation, West Bengal (LFWB) has been trying to develop a “Third Sector” model – neither public nor corporate for-profit. This model is rooted in the principle that healthcare is a service, not a commodity. It has redefined professional care that maximises efficiency with a commitment to public well-being and not escalating greed. And which sustains and grows based on recycled surpluses to build institutional wealth and not individual assets. Overall, the Liver Foundation operates as a social collective with the mission of cultivating better opportunities for every life. LFWB’s history resembles a curtain unfurling in a rhythmic way over time. and in its relatively short journey so far, the Foundation has been able to leave a big imprint on both health policies and services in West Bengal.
The Indian Institute of Liver and Digestive Sciences (IILDS), founded in 2016 by the Liver Foundation, West Bengal (LFWB) with the support of philanthropic donations, has developed into a premier institution for advanced clinical care, education, and research dedicated to gastrointestinal and liver diseases in eastern India. Taking over the operational responsibilities, IILDS launched OPD & daycare facilities for Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital in Kolkata on April 7th, coinciding with World Health Day.
